About the Artists
Gamelan Bike Bike draws its musical inspiration from Bali, Indonesia and its raw materials from the scrap metal bins of Vancouver. Since forming in 2012, the group has built unconventional instruments as a means to spark creativity, foster community, and generate new forms of contemporary gamelan. The ensemble is dedicated to performing new music, including compositions from guest composers I Putu Gede Sukaryana (Balot) and I Putu Swaryandana Ichi Oka from Bali. Their recent album Teka-Teki (2024), released by Indonesia-based label Insitu Recordings, is a series of intricate, puzzle-like works bridging sonic imaginaries between Bali and Vancouver. The ensemble offers introductory workshops as well as longer term opportunities for people to learn and play gamelan together.
“Gamelan Bike Bike has proved to be a fertile environment for cross-cultural artistic innovation, presenting Indonesian music from a uniquely Vancouver perspective” (Jakarta Post)
Piu is a musician, composer, and producer residing on the unceded territories of the Snuneymuxw, Snaw-naw-as, and Stzuminus people (BC, Canada). She builds immersive sonic worlds where frequencies and transients converge with emotion. Her songs and soundscapes invite reflection, and represent a convergence between ecology and technology, bridging the precision of design with the fluidity of sound. Anchored in her Indian classical training but pulled towards the frontiers of experimental and electronic music, Piu’s sound is simultaneously grounded and unbound. Her productions weave raga-inspired vocal lines, tactile synth textures, and field recordings, and move fluidly between genres, cultures, and identities—a reflection of how she navigates the world. She has performed at major Canadian electronic music festivals including MUTEK Montréal and New Forms Festival, and collaborates widely with artists across genres and continents.
